Mary Josephine "Min" Ryan was born in 1885, in Tomcoole, near Taghmon, Co. Wexford, one of 12 siblings (4 boys and 8 girls). She and her sisters were educated by the Loreto nuns and qualified as teachers after studying at the Royal University and University College Dublin. After graduation Min Ryan spent 2 years teaching English in German religious schools and later went to London where she spent 4 years teaching. She established the London branch of Cumann na mBan. In 1915 she returned to Dublin to teach in the Rathmines Technical School. Shortly after her return to Dublin, she met Sean McDermott who wrote her numerous letters. During the Easter Rising She and her younger sister visited the GPO daily as messengers. She visited Sean McDermott in his cell a few hours before his execution. After the Rising, she was sent by Cumann na mBan to America to inform John Devoy and the Clann na nGael about the Rising. She met Richard Mulcahy after his release from Frongoch on Christmas Eve 1916 and married him in June 1919. They had 6 children. Mulcahy became Chief of Staff of the Irish Volunteers in March 1918. The Treaty and Civil War divided the Ryan family, with the majority of them opposing the Treaty while Min and her sister Agnes (who married Denis McCullough) supported the Treaty.
