Notes:The poem is written on the headed paper of the Hamilton family of Hamwood, Co. Meath. Manuscript annotations in pencil on the verso of page 2 read 'Written by William Tighe Gren Guards When staying at Hamwood a week before he was killed'.

William Frederick Tighe was the eldest son of Col. Frederick Bunbury Tighe and Kathleen Tighe (née Ponsonby) of Woodstock, Inistiogue, Co. Kilkenny. He was a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards, and was killed in action in April 1887.
