compiled by the National Library of Ireland,

[electronic resource] / 2011-

The web archive contains snapshots of blogs, fora, news sites, publications, official government and party political sites, and any other site deemed relevant to the collecting mission of the National Library of Ireland. These websites were either archiving as part of a thematic collection as stand alone archives. In keeping with the Library's mission to collect, preserve, promote and make accessible the documentary and intellectual record of the life of Ireland, snapshots were taken of each website in order to preserve them and to provide access to them over the long-term.

Notes:The Web Archive was set up to preserve websites over the long-term and is designed for research and private study only.

Websites were selected for inclusion in the Web Archive according to a number of criteria. The website must be of relevance to the Library's Collection Development Policy and to any topical subject under consideration. The websites are also selected on the basis of potential long-term research value, the current risk of loss and popularity or recognition of value on the Web e.g recipient of a web award. Websites may also be chosen if they complement the Library's existing collections. For technical reasons, it is not possible to archive some websites and these will be excluded.

Vendor Information: Web crawls were carried out by the Internet Memory Foundation, a non-profit organisation established to actively support the preservation of Internet as a new media for heritage and cultural purpose. See: http://internetmemory.org/en/.

Web archiving at the National Library of Ireland began in 2011.
