Maurice Moore was born 10 August 1854 at Moore Hall, Ballyglass, County Mayo, the son of George Henry Moore, MP for Mayo and leader of the tenant right movement in the 1860s. In June 1874 he joined the army as a sub-lieutenant in the land forces before joining the 88th Regiement and becoming lieutenant in August 1875. He fought in the Xhosa and Anglo-Zulu wars in the 1870’s, the Second Boer War, the battles of Ladysmith, Colenso, Spion Kop and Vaal Krantz. He was honoured for his service with the rank of brevet colonel and the CB in 1902. However, he was appalled by the military treatment of Boer civilians and the concentration camps and condemned these actions in anonymous articles in the ‘Freeman’s Journal’. He retired from the army in 1906. Moore was a supported of the Gaelic League and taught himself Irish. In 1913 he was appointed to the provisional committee of the Irish Volunteers as a representative of the United Irish League and inspector general of the Irish Volunteers. He reluctantly supported John Redmond’s takeover of the Volunteers in 1914 but later broke with Redmond in 1916 following the 1916 Easter Rising. That year he, alongside Agnes O’Farrelly, arranged a petition seeking a reprieve for Roger Casement who was on trial for his involvement in the Rising. By 1917 he was a supporter of Sinn Féin and his house in Dublin was raided on numerous occasions by the British Forces during the War of Independence. In 1921 he went to South Africa on behalf of Dáil Éireann to seek the support of Jan Christiaan Smut for Irish Independence. In 1922 he served as Dáil Éireann envoy to France to improve relations with the French government and press. He became a member of the Irish Free State senate from 1922 until 1936 and Seanad Éireann from 1937 until his death. Moore died 8 September 1939 in Dublin.
