Papers of Senator James Green Douglas; Douglas' retained drafts and copies of his own letters which reflect his political activities as a senator in the Irish Free State, including his position on the Constitutional Committee and Postal Commission. Many letters relate to his involvement with the Irish White Cross and the distribution of funds from the American Committee for Relief in Ireland. James Green Douglas was born on 11 July 1887 in Brighton Square, Dublin. In 1902 he began a three-year apprenticeship in his father’s business and from an early age he was fascinated by politics and influenced by the newspapers edited by Arthur Griffith. He became a member of the Dublin Liberal Association and after the 1916 Rising Douglas set out to promote ‘full dominion status’ for Ireland. In 1921 Douglas set up the Irish White Cross and acted as honorary treasurer and trustee. After Dáil Éireann approved the Anglo-Irish Treaty (1921), Michael Collins appointed Douglas as Chairman of the committee to draft the Irish Constitution of the Irish Free State. Douglas went on to become vice-chairman of Seanad Éireann and was a senator numerous times in his career. He represented Ireland at many interparliamentary conferences. He also served as president of the Linen and Cotton Textile Manufacturers Association and as a member of the council of the Federated Union of Employers. He died on 16 September 1954. |
