Notes:This letter from Maria has a shorthand note at top of the first page, probably an addition by Tom(who used shorthand to communicate with John Daly in prison). She says "Your very consoling letter Mama got all right. God bless you for it .. She is in good health, and my own dear Brother, you must not worry about her. While I have health and strength to work for her, I will, and T.G. I have both always .. I only wish I could hear some good news to write you, but as the old saying goes, long looked for must come at last. I am sorry you did not see dear Father before the end .. And now dear Brother keep a brave heart like you always do ..".
