| Notes: | Best, Richard Irvine (1872–1959), Celticist and librarian, was born 17 January 1872 at 3 Bishop St., Derry. He was a member of the Irish Literary Society in the mid-1890s and joined the Irish literary circle in Paris following his move there. During this time he also gained knowled of palaeography and an enthusiasm for Old and Middle Irish manifested in his translation of Le cycle mythologique irlandais et la mythologie celtique in 1884. He joined the staff of the National Library of Ireland in 1904, becoming chief librarian in 1924 and, subsequently, director. He wrote prolifically on Celtic philology and literature and, on his retirement from the National Library of Ireland, he became a senior professor in the School of Celtic Studies at the newly founded DIAS (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies). - Dictionary of Irish Biography, http://dib.cambridge.org .
