| Notes: | Gwynn, Stephen Lucius (1864–1950), man of letters, politician, and soldier, was born 13 February 1864 at St Columba's College, Rathfarnham, Dublin, eldest child of John Gwynn, warden of St Columba's and later professor of divinity at TCD, and his wife, Lucy Josephine, the daughter of William Smith O'Brien. As a protestant intellectual involved in the cultural revival movement, Glynn wrote many articles in support of home rule and he won a seat in Galway City in 1906 and remained a representative of the Irish Parliamentary Party until 1918. He served with the British forces during World War I, obtaining the rank of captain in 1915, and in July 1917 was made a chevalier of the Legion d'honneur. In the later part of his life he published over sixty books, including memoirs, essays, a study on Thomas More and a semi-fictionalised account of Robert Emmet, and received honorary doctorates from NUI and TCD in 1940 and 1942. - Dictionary of Irish Biography, http://dib.cambridge.org .
