Photographs depict political and social scenes in Ireland and Northern Ireland throughout the 1950s-2000s, including Croagh Patrick pilgrims, Arkle, Ronnie Delaney, Sonia O'Sullivan, the destruction of Nelson's Pillar, the Troubles, haymaking, the Spire and the Luas as well as several world leaders such as John F. Kennedy, Charles de Gaulle, Éamon de Valera, Seán Lemass, Princess Grace, Pope John Paul II and Charlie Chaplin.

Notes:Some of the boxes/envelopes contain non photographic material such as newspaper cuttings, notes of the photographer, leaflets, booklets, letters, CDs, floppy discs, VHS tapes.

Some of the items are captioned and/or dated.

A small number of images have been catalogued under the name Colman Doyle and call number CDOY, mainly the images used in the 2007 National Photographic Archive exhibition "Eyewitness: Colman Doyle".

The Collection contains contact prints.

VINEGAR SYNDROME: There are at least 2000 acetate negatives, many affected by vinegar syndrome located on shelves 1159- 1161.

There is a box containing 15 cine film reels on Shelf 1173.

Large prints from the collection are housed on Shelves 1337-1341.

The empty envelopes have been retained and are housed on Shelves 1123-1131.

Colman Doyle is a prize-winning news photographer. In 1951 he became a staff photographer for the 'Irish Press' and was also Ireland photographer for 'Paris Match' for forty years.
