Our Own Place Photographic Project Collection, PC

[graphic]

The Our Own Place Photographic Project was a follow-on project from the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991. That project was a co-operative venture jointly organised by the Federation of Local History Societies and the Federation of Ulster Local Studies, where a thousand scenes from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated one hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating an archive in both the National Library and the Ulster Museum. The objective was to facilitate the study of the changing topography of cities, towns and rural areas throughout Ireland. In considering a follow up joint project, the two Federations were conscious that many of the most significant scenes of today vary significantly from the scenes selected as important by William Lawrence a century ago. Accordingly, the project 'Our Own Place' was commissioned. It consists of a series of approximately 800 photographs and accompanying captions recording the most significant scenes of the mid-1990s, selected by the local communities themselves. Because of this freedom to choose the form of each local contribution, the approach varies widely from community to community resulting in a diverse collection of photographs, incorporating street scenes, housing estates, schools, people at work, prominent buildings, scenes at risk etc. This collection will provide future researchers a detailed view of how societies in Ireland in the mid-1990s viewed themselves.
