Description:Emily writes that the Clancartys [Ambassador to The Hague, Richard Le Poer Trench, 2nd Earl of Clancarty, (1767-1837) and his wife Henrietta Margaret, (née Staples), niece of Thomas Conolly], are expected to accompany the Prince of Orange [(1792-1849), later King William II of the Netherlands] to Brussels. He has been advised that it would be politic [sic] to spend some time there with his new and unwilling subjects. He [referred to as 'The Hereditary Prince'] has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the army there and it is hoped his engaging manners will mitigate any prejudice against his family. However she adds that there is no certainty about these arrangements and it is likely that the Clancartys will remain at The Hague, in which case Emily and her aunt Lady Louisa Conollly will leave the following week. She refers to social activities in the Hague and her opinion of Madame de Maintenon. Emily says she is opposed to restoring the French slave trade. She remarks she is puzzled at Napoleon’s current activities.
