Photographer J. J. Clarke (1879-1961); born Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan. Educated at Castleknock College and Catholic University, Dublin, from where he qualified as a doctor in 1904. It is about this time (ca.1897-1904) that he is believed to have taken the extensive collection of photographs of Dublin and its environs. He travelled extensively, both abroad and in Ireland, spending twice yearly holidays in Co. Donegal, principally at Bundoran, where many of his earliest photographs were taken. All of the photographs of the Clarke Collection were taken by him, with the exception of CLAR113 and CLAR113a, both of which were taken by the Lawrence Studio and previously owned by J. J. Clarke.

Selection of Clarke Collection images exhibited under the title "Edwardian Cameraman", Dublin Camera Club, 1976.
