[A collection of 141 drawings illustrating the castles, abbeys, churches and other architectural antiquities of Ireland and some of England]

Francis Grose, (1731-1791), came to Ireland in May 1791 to start work on "Antiquities of Ireland". He had apparently visited Ireland before, as two of his drawings, afterwards engraved for his book, were executed in 1790, and three as early as 1770. On arriving in Dublin, he immediately commenced an antiquarian tour, accompanied by his assistant Thomas Cocking (fl. ca. 1783-1791) and made a few drawings for his book. His work was suspended by his sudden death on May 12th, 1791, in Dublin. He was buried on May 18th in Drumcondra churchyard. At the time of his death, only 24 views had been engraved for "Antiquities of Ireland", including only 7 pages of text written. His nephew Daniel Grose took up the work, and the letterpress by the Reverend Edward Ledwich, vicar of Aghaboe (Laois). In addition to the drawings already made, by Cocking and Grose, William Burton-Conyngham contributed from his collection drawings by Angelo Maria Bigari, Barralet and others. The book was published by Samuel Hooper of Holburn. Volume I was published in 1794, although the title page shows the date 1791, and Volume II in 1796.
