Red cover with dark red leather binding and corners. Title inscribed on spine in gold lettering. Sketchbook contains watercolours of American birds. Miss Battersby had two doctor nephews called Robert, one in the army and the other the inheritor of Lislin (the family estate in County Cavan, Ireland). The latter is probably the artist as there is no mention made of army rank.

Inscribed in ink on unnumbered page facing first illustrated page: Drawings from a collection of Birds shot in Pennsylvania, North America by Robert Battersby Esqr: M:D: 1834. Painted by Miss Battersby & presented by her to the Right Hon: Royal Dublin Society 1836. NB: All the Birds the size of nature.

Catalogue on second last unnumbered page of sketchbook.

One of 5 sketchbooks or albums given by a Miss Battersby to the Royal Dublin Society in 1820 and 1836. One other sketchbook is in the Ulster Museum and gives the address of the artist as "No. 16 Mountjoy Square East" . According to the Dublin Directories this house in Mountjoy Square belongs to a Mrs. Battersby, presumably Miss Battersby's mother. She may have been Mary, the unmarried daughter of Robert Battersby of Bobsville, County Meath, Ireland, who in 1763 married Marianne, daughter and co-heiress of Haynes Wade of Lislin, County Cavan, Ireland.
