Where are ye going with th'gun, Tim? Whist - Diddy - I'm sworn. Voice. (Without). Ye won't be safe till ye do it

[graphic]

C.W. Cole spent time in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. He was working as a special artist for The Graphic, reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League in the west of Ireland in 1880. This drawing depicts a woman trying to restrain her husband from leaving the cottage with a gun in his hand. Outside a man waits on a cart and a baby lies asleep in a cradle in the cottage. According to the Graphic, December 18th 1880, this image "is of course, an imaginary picture, but none the less truthful in that account, for there can be no doubt that many such a distressing incident has been enacted of late in the disturbed districts"
