C.W. Cole spent time in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. He was working as a special artist for The Graphic reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League in the west of Ireland. At Ballinrobe he covered the so-called Boycott Relief Expedition (12th - 26th November 1880). Father John O'Malley, a local parish priest and also the president of the Ballinrobe Land League, directed the persecution of Captain Boycott.
