She was murdered by her lover, Lieutenant John Scanlan, who was defended in court by Daniel O'Connell (The Liberator). This historical incident took place at Carrigafoyle Island, County Limerick. The story of the Colleen Bawn was the inspiration for the nineteenth century Irish novel "The Collegians" by Gerald Griffin
